Esper is smartly positioned as a mission-critical tool for global companies spanning a broad range of industries, including healthcare technology, retail, food & beverage, education, and beyond. As a mobile device management and DevOps platform, they support device fleets as small as tens of devices up to a million, which proves to be a unique design challenge for their suite of products and APIs.
I joined Esper as their Principal Product Designer just after they closed Series B, and was tasked with scaling the core product interface while establishing their Product Design team. As the only seasoned designer on staff, I split my time as an individual contributor and people manager, and was promoted to Director of Product Design within 9 months. To contain the costs and complexity of creating a team while building a nuanced technical product, I recommended we start with a lean team of generalist Product Designers and a Design System Designer before onboarding specialists. I outlined the Product Design career ladder, oversaw hiring, managed design operations, and guided iterative feature development.
